On November 1st, 2009, the first 25 trees in the Luthergarten were adopted. Auxiliary Bishop Monsignore Franco Giulio Brambilla (citing the selected Bible verse next to the Director of the LWF Center Wittenberg, Hans W. Kasch) planted a honey locust tree on behalf of the Archdiocese Milan in Italy.
On January 22nd, 2011, during an ecumenical noon prayer for peace, a pomegranate tree was planted at the Basilica San Marco for the Archdiocese of Milan. Representatives of the church leadership of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (VELKD) were “in the footsteps of Martin Luther” in Milan and could thus take part in the tree planting. Bishop Dr. Johannes Friedrich of the VELKD (center) and Gianfranco Bottoni of the Archdiocese of Milan preached.
