On January 27th, 2016, Pastor Gert Jacobus Duursema (with spade, in front of the tree) planted a London plane tree on behalf of the Dutch Reformed Church in Northern Cape, South Africa. During a visit in Wittenberg, he found out about this unique Reformation project. He enthusiastically contacted his church and planted a tree for his church in the Luther Garden the next day.
On October 20th, 2016, during a synod assembly, a plane tree was planted for the Dutch Reformed Church in Northern Cape, South Africa. All the delegates, together representing 83 congregations, took part in the ceremony. Each participant laid a white stone at the foot of the tree. This recalls the white stones which are laid at the memorial next to the Wittenberg Town Church on the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism every year on January 27th.
