On October 21st, 2012, during a conference of the Lutheran World Federation, Archbishop Andres Pöder (watering the tree) planted a field maple tree on behalf of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church.
On October 13th, 2017, Archbishop Urmas Viilma (2nd from right) and Mayor of Tallin, Taavi Aas (right) planted an apple tree in the historic Bishop’s Garden directly adjacent to the Cathedral. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the city helped transform the Bishop’s Garden into a park with views of the city and the sea. In the summer of 2016, the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church started a campaign to plant 500 apple trees by the Reformation anniversary. The apple tree in the Bishop’s Garden received the honor of being named the 500th tree; although 522 plantings had already taken place in Estonia by October 2017 through the efforts of individuals, farms, schools, communities, organizations, and more.
