On May 29th, 2017, Church Superintendent Markus Zimmermann (watering the tree) planted a silver linden tree on behalf of the Evangelical Church District Cologne-North, Germany. The planting took place after the final event of the 36th German Protestant Church Convention in Wittenberg.
Pastor Susanne Zimmermann invited participation in an ecumenical tree planting project in 2017, for which the church district donated a tree for every congregation. Many congregations took part; here is a small selection of their activities:
On October 31st, 2017, a tree was planted on the church grounds in Cologne-Junkersdorf, following a worship service with settings of Luther chorales.
In Weidenpesch, the Protestant congregation of Cologne-Mauenheim-Weidenpesch symbolically presented an apple tree as “Luther Tree” to the Catholic parish Mauenheim/Niehl/Weidenpesch. The tree was planted a week later in the garden of the Holy Cross day care center.
On Reformation Day 2017, another tree was planted on the grounds of Grace Church in Brauweiler.
On September 15th, 2017, the Protestant congregation of Weiden/Lövenich gave their partner congregation of St. Mary a tree for the parish garden. The little tree was planted during an ecumenical creation worship service.
