On August 27th, 2016, Pastor Doris Escobar (right, next to the tree, with certificate) planted a silver linden tree on behalf of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation Katharina von Bora and the Roman Catholic Congregation Liebfrauen in Hildesheim, Germany, including the Church of St. George, during an ecumenical study trip for the congregation. Unfortunately, Pastor Wolfgang Voges was not able to come to Wittenberg, which is why he was represented by a member of the church council.
On April 17th, 2017, Easter Monday, Pastor Doris Escobar of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation Katharina von Bora (foreground center) and Pastor Wolfgang Voges of the Roman Catholic Liebfrauen Congregation in Hildesheim with the church St.-Georg (left, next to Escobar) planted a beech tree as partner tree for both congregations. Members of the Catholic and Protestant congregations in Itzum took part in the planting. The location of the “Luther Beech” was consciously chosen to not be on the grounds of the church but rather in the middle of Itzum, next to a retirement home, right there in the world, so that all the people passing by would be reminded of the Reformation as well as the good community between the Catholic and Protestant congregations in Itzum.
