On October 21st, 2012, during a conference of the Lutheran World Federation in Wittenberg on the topic of theological education, Bishop Gerhard Ulrich (reading the selected bible verse) planted a common ash tree on behalf of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany.
On July 4th, 2013, Presiding Bishop of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD), Bishop Gerhard Ulrich of Schwerin, planted a partner tree for the VELKD at the church offices of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) in Hanover. Representatives of the church leadership of the VELKD, the executive committee of the Union of Evangelical Churches (UEK), and the churchwide office of the EKD took part in the ceremony.
